How long does it take to get a UK passport?

For a standard application made from the UK, HM Passport Office reports that in 2025, where no further information was required, 99.7% of standard applications were processed within 3 weeks. That is the headline number, and it is a good one. But the sentence contains a condition that matters more than the figure: where no further information was required.

If HM Passport Office needs to ask you something, or to see a document, or to hold an identity interview, the application can take longer than three weeks, and you will be told within those three weeks. So the honest answer is: usually around three weeks, but a clean application is the whole game. Time you can control is time you spend getting the application right the first time.

The standard service, step by step

GOV.UK's passport service lets you "apply for, renew, replace or update your passport and pay for it online." You need a debit or credit card, and you need a passport photo.

The clock is generally counted from when your documents are received, not from the day you click submit. If you are sending documents in the post, that means the days in transit come on top.

Applying online is quicker than applying by post. GOV.UK says so directly: "It takes longer to apply by post than online." It is also cheaper. GOV.UK states that "It's £13.50 cheaper to apply for a passport online than by post." If you do not have a good reason to apply on paper, online is the faster route.

What can make it take longer

Nothing on this list is unusual, and most of it is preventable.

A photo that is not acceptable. A photo that fails the rules has to be replaced, and you lose time while that happens. This is the most avoidable delay of all, because you can check a photo before you submit. Missing or unclear documents. If an application needs supporting documents and they are late or unreadable, HM Passport Office has to ask for them.

Identity checks. Some applications need an interview or further checks. GOV.UK says the standard service "may take longer than 3 weeks if more information is needed or an interview is required."

Applying from abroad. These take longer. HM Passport Office advises overseas applicants to allow at least six weeks, and says it will tell you within four weeks if it needs more information.

Mistakes on the form. A misspelt name or wrong date of birth is easy to make and costly to correct.

When should you apply?

Work backwards from the date you will actually need the passport, and leave more room than three weeks.

A sensible rule is to treat three weeks as the middle of the range, not the end of it. Then add the things you cannot see: post, a photo that needs replacing, a document query. If you have an important trip booked, apply as soon as you know you will need to.

GOV.UK also gives a clear warning about what not to do: "Do not book travel until you have a valid passport — your new passport will not have the same number as your old one." Airlines need the number on the passport you will travel with, so booking on an old passport and hoping for the best can leave you with a booking that needs to be changed.

Also check the validity of your current passport as well as the date. Many countries have their own rules about how much validity has to remain, so check the entry requirements of your destination on GOV.UK's travel advice pages, not just your passport's expiry date.

What if you need it sooner than three weeks?

There are two paid urgent services, both online.

1 week Fast Track. Available for renewals, personal detail changes, replacements and child passports. GOV.UK says "The earliest you can get an appointment is the next day after you apply," and the passport is "delivered to you by courier 1 week after your appointment." At the time of writing the adult fee is £192.

1 day Premium. Only for adult renewals. The earliest appointment is two days after you apply, and the new passport is ready to collect from the passport office four hours after the appointment. At the time of writing it costs £239.50.

Both services need a digital photo, submitted as part of the online application. Fees change, so check them on GOV.UK before you choose.

If the reason is a medical emergency, government business or a family emergency, GOV.UK says to call the Passport Adviceline instead. If you are already abroad, you may need to apply for an emergency travel document.

Getting the photo right the first time

The photo is the one part of the application you can fully check before you press submit. GOV.UK asks for a digital photo that is:

• at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall
• at least 50KB and no more than 10MB
• clear, in focus, in colour and unaltered by computer software
• taken in the last month

A simple timeline to work to

Instead of trusting a date, work through this order:

1. Check your passport's expiry and the entry rules of where you are travelling.
2. Take the photo first. Do this before you open the form, so you are not rushing it.
3. Apply online if you can. It is cheaper and quicker than post.
4. Do not book non-refundable travel until the new passport is in your hand.
5. If the date is tight, look at Fast Track or Premium before you run out of days, not after.
